Certification is valid for three years. During this time CFMs are required to earn 120 maintenance points in at least two of the following four categories:
- Practice
- Continuing Education
- Professional Involvement
- Development of the Profession
A list of point-earning activities in each of these areas is sent to each new CFM.

To maintain their credential, CFMs submit a list of the activities they performed along with the appropriate supporting documentation. They also submit a processing fee of $210 (U.S. dollars) for members and $265 (U.S. dollars) for nonmembers. To pay by credit card, you may include your card information on the renewal checklist form or use the secure FM Credential Payments link on the bottom of the page located at: www.ifma.org/learning/fm_credentials. Your card will not be charged until your maintenance documents are received and approved. A paid receipt will be included with your new certificate.
After the official expiration date, there is a three-month grace period in which CFMs may renew without penalty. If a package is received anywhere from three-months and one-day to six-months after the expiration date, it will also need to include a late fee of $100 (U.S. dollars). The rules of the International Credentials Committee mandate that anyone who goes more than six months past their expiration date without renewing their CFM will lose it and must re-take the CFM Exam in order to regain it.
Reminder notices are sent out as a courtesy; it is each CFM’s professional obligation to renew their CFM in a timely manner. It is also their responsibility to ensure that their address record is kept current.
“The CFM designation not only strengthens my confidence in performing daily tasks, but also encourages our facility department to promote the recognition of trade standards in the field of property maintenance and facility management.”
- Hackman Hon Yin Lee, CFM, Chief Engineer of the Hong Kong Football Club, Hong Kong, China
